St Peter’s Festive Fayre
The Festive Fayre was a great success with over 90 volunteers under the leadership of Roger Waddell, who worked tirelessly in the weeks leading up to the day itself. There was a great community spirit and, in spite of the weather, lots of visitors and a wonderful atmosphere in the halls. The sum of £3,000 was raised-so a BIG ‘Thank You’ to everyone.

Indoor Boot Fair
The Indoor Boot Fair on 27 Jan raised £354.13! Once again, many thanks to all who came and supported it and to those who gave up their morning to run it. The Garden of Remembrance needs some £17,000 to repair and refurbish it, so your continued support is really important.

Wine & Wisdom
1st December 2017 – In spite of the many other events in the area that night we raised over £400, so thank you to all who donated prizes and helped set up and run this event. The new sound and IT system proved to be hugely successful and was able to do proper justice to Jane Green’s fun questions. These included projected pictures and music questions and an electronic score board, not to mention packets of real nuts to identify. At the moment only one Wine & Wisdom is booked for next year, but as this was so popular, another one might be arranged.
Messages of thanks have been sent to all who contributed to the success of this event which raised very nearly £3,000. This is magnificent and will greatly benefit the Church in many ways. Thank you all again!
Indoor Boot Fair
A big thank you to all who helped set up, donated cakes and items for sale and ran this once again successful event. It is hoped to announce the amount raised in Church. Booking for the next two boot fairs will start very soon, so please spread the word!

Wine and Wisdom
Another great success and a fun evening as well! Thank you all SO much for your various contributions towards the event which seemed to go off pretty well and much enjoyed by nearly 100 people. It’s quite a labour intensive affair as you will have seen, but we managed with your help to look calm and well organised! A very special thank you to Jane who produced some excellent, fun and yet testing questions and we all loved the spice (or was it something else?!) sniffing interlude! Also another thank you to Daniel who gallantly offered to put all the tables and chairs away before he went home.
We made a handsome £554, of which £249.40 came from the raffle/donation envelopes.
Anyway a very good and happy evening and all down to you-thank you all very much indeed.
The Film & Buffet evening
This event, attended by a sizeable audience in the very up-market auditorium in the Baptist Church in Broadstairs, was very kindly organised by the Village Tour for St Peter’s Appeal. Preceded by a buffet and a glass of wine, the film, ‘The Man who knew infinity’ was both moving and gripping and raised well over £1,000!
Talk & Afternoon Tea
Thank you very much indeed to those who made the delicious sandwiches and cakes, to those who set up and cleared away and of course to those who came and supported this fun event. We raised £340.58 which is very gratifying-well done everyone.
The Choral Concert
Tuesday 28th March with St. Peter’s Choir, soloists and the choir of Dane Court Grammar School was well supported and very enjoyable. Over £400 was raised which will be shared between St Peter’s and the school.
Once again this year we were blessed with beautiful weather for our Festive Fayre/Fair. The day before helpers worked from midday until quite late in the evening setting up their stalls with limited access to all of the area, but by the next morning all was in place and we were ready to welcome all-comers. All the usual stalls were there with beautifully crafted cakes, jewellery, bric à brac, produce and conserves. The clothes required extra hanging rails to display things to their best advantage. In the foyer and in the Portland Centre raffle tickets were being sold and inside the hall where the excellent prizes were displayed, more sellers were working. The produce stall was fortunate to have items kindly donated by the congregation and flowers from Jim French and vegetables from Geoffrey Philpot, both stalwart supporters of our big events.
A new display of Kitchen and Home items and Mystery Parcels were introduced, both of which proved very successful as were the two cafes which catered steadily throughout the day. Behind the scenes and in the ‘Counting House’ the finance team patiently counted out and reckoned up often being interrupted in their work!
In the Portland hall, the superb display of books and DVDs could be found with the children’s toys and games and the Craft stall with beautiful hand knits of all kinds. The choir members stepped in to run the Portland café beside their fine homemade biscuits. This was a very popular meeting place enjoyed by all.
Obviously, our aim is to raise funds for the Church and its buildings, but the equally important factor is to meet the local community and provide a positive experience for all.
The result was we raised £3,000 – so all in all a great all-round! Thank you to everyone who helped and supported the event.
Summer Fete 2016

.Out on the Green the Sprats’ leader with some of the families had set up games and activities including face painting, beat the goalie, tin can alley and crafts. The Fun Dog Show was once again an outstanding success with groups for every kind of canine friend and so well behaved and the ‘Toys for Sale’ stall did excellent trade.
The strawberries and cream were very popular and sold out quickly.The Portland Hall was the place to find books and DVDs, which had been carefully categorised by the stallholders. The café there, with tastefully decorated tables and chairs, provided an opportunity to sit and enjoy tea and delicious cakes as well as seeing the hand knits and crafts so well presented nearby Saturday arrived with sunshine and a light breeze. Our stalwart chaps erected the marquee and gazebos and bunting festooned the buildings. At 10am the doors opened and the first comers were rummaging through bric à brac, buying filled rolls and drinks from the main hall café and checking out the produce, flowers, preserves, tombola, scarves, accessories and the nearly new clothes. The cake stall returned to the main hall this year and proved to be a great success and a terrible temptation for would be dieters!
Our MP made a whistle stop tour of the stalls and departed with some lettuces.
The Mayor and Mayoress were also welcome guests.
After weeks of preparation the day finally dawned for the Fête. The day before stallholders and helpers had worked so hard to get all the indoor stalls ready, ending with the books, café and crafts. Raffle tickets had been sold, posters had been put up and distributed throughout the community and all we needed was good weather and the crowds to attend.

From Catwalk to Quire
Over 50 assembled in the attractively laid-out hall to hear a fascinating and amusing talk by Margaret Ovenden on her very different and challenging careers. A special tea prepared by our indefatigable team of cake, sandwich, scone and tea makers followed this. Here are a few pictures from the event:
EWM Fashion Show
The second Edinburgh Woollens (EWM) Fashion Show showcasing some of the new Spring collection, took place in the evening of Monday 13th April in St Peter’s Parish hall. This turned out to be a hugely successful occasion which attracted over 100 guests who, after their arrival free drink, settled down to an evening viewing, not only our own elegant lady models, but also three brave men who also took part.
The show was skilfully compered by Kim Young, the manageress of EWM in Wyevale, Ramsgate whose light touch made the event such fun and Margaret McManus managed the in-house matters with equal charm. An excellently selected raffle and also a Tombola, proved to be very good earners. In addition bar and coffee/tea facilities were available, which all helped the evening go smoothly and enjoyably so we were pleased to be able to report that £976 had been raised.
The next EWM fashion Show is planned for Monday 21st September when the shop’s Autumn collection should be on display.
Wine & Wisdom
On Friday 18th March, St Peter’s Church held a very enjoyable Wine & Wisdom Evening, during which a fish & chips supper was served.
Thanet Gospel Choir
On 18th July, Thanet Gospel Choir performed in the Church. Full report to follow, but here are the pictures so far:
The Karaoke Evening put on by Brian and Sandra Calder in St Peter’s Church Hall on Saturday 20th February, to raise funds towards the Church Tower Appeal Fund, was a great success and the evening raised the magnificent sum of £230. There were several excellent soloists and duets, as well as groups from St Peter’s Church and The Wyevale Garden Centre. This is where Brian and Sandra have worked tirelessly raising funds, dressed in Victorian costumes and their total, including two Karaoke Evenings, is now around £2,000. Further events are planned and it is hoped that after last night’s very enjoyable evening, the next Karaoke evening will be in December when we anticipate a sell-out.
The Festive Fayre
Last year, as indeed for several past years, there had been a very successful Autumn Fair, initially run by the Friends and more recently by St Peter’s. However to give it a new look and to reflect more accurately what it was all about, it was ‘rebranded’ ‘The Festive Fayre.’ With her experience and contacts from the very successful Summer Fête, Margaret McManus co-ordinated the event whilst Kate McGregor was also responsible for certain key aspects.
The event volunteers, most of whom had been, working hard at the Summer Fete less than five months earlier, showed again what a wonderful team they are. A great deal of preparation work took place in the month leading to the Fayre. Parishioners and those from further afield provided the organisers with an amazing amount of items with which to fill the stalls. On the afternoon and evening before the Fayre, the stall holders and their helpers transformed both the Church Hall and the Portland Centre into a truly Festive Fayre.
Having the use of both halls with two venues to have a break for refreshments proved a success. In the Portland Centre the cake stall, as always, attracted a lot of interest, as did the very successful book and gift stall. The children’s area was well used with games, competitions and items of clothing and equipment for sale. These were on the Green in the summer and were not adequately staffed so when it rained, the stalls were isolated. At the Fayre and now located indoors, things were much improved. It was felt that it was very important to have plenty for the youngsters to do and it is hoped that we can build on this success in the future.
The stalls in the Church Hall were busy from beginning to end. We had a very full raffle which benefited from many generous donors, including local businesses and the tickets sold well, as did the calendars, notelets and cards. The accessories stall was new this time and was very busy. Other stalls were all successful: bric-à-brac, fresh produce, nearly new, crafts, hand-made, craft kits, tombola, Traidcraft and competitions (eg name the doll and guess the weight of the cake).
The outcome was a highly respectable total of £3,200. The helpers and donors are too many to name and thank, but suffice it to say the additional publicity went well and the public all seemed to enjoy the day as much as we enjoyed arranging it.

The Fashion Show
On the 13th October, which was a particularly wet and blowy evening, a large group of ladies and a few gentlemen assembled at St Peter’s Church Hall for our first fundraising Fashion Show. The evening was organised by Charles and Manana Watson on behalf of the St Peter’s Fundraising committee and in conjunction with the Edinburgh Woollen Mill Ltd (EWM). Ten brave ladies volunteered to be models and were able to visit EWM to choose their outfits and accessories. For all of them it was a new experience.
Charles and Manana had spent a great deal of time planning the event and every effort had been made to make the hall look attractive with suitable decorations and plants. From the first arrival of the audience the warm atmosphere and air of expectation prevailed.
Kim Young, the Manager at the EWM branch in Ramsgate, was a charming compere and she introduced each model with a description of the garments, available colours, sizes and cost. All attendees were able to purchase items at a special 20% discount. For bona fide attendees this discount would be maintained until the end of the month in the store.
The audience particularly admired the accessories including scarves and very reasonably priced jewellery.
Drinks were served in the interval and the raffle prizes were drawn for the lucky winners. Also a fireside chair was auctioned and achieved the magnificent sum of £92 bringing the total sum raised close to £800.
