St Peter’s Churchyard has 54 burials from the two World Wars. Because of the size of the Churchyard (9 acres) many of them are hard to find. This year is the 100th Commemoration of the start of the First World War.
With funds provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Friends of St Peter’s War Graves have installed two panels showing the location of the graves. These boards were unveiled on 23rd August 2014, exactly 100 years after John Parr, aged 17, was killed. He is believed to be the first British soldier killed on the Western Front.
At the same time, Kent County Council provided funds for a similar panel for the WW2 casualties.
