News Sheet 22/03/20

A warm welcome to the

News Sheet for Sunday 22nd March 2020

St. Peter’s Church events

Following the Government’s guidelines and advice from the Church of England, all church services, fund-raising events, SPRATS and hall bookings have been cancelled for the foreseeable future.

St Peter’s church will however be open every day (including Saturdays and Sundays) from 10am – 11am for private prayer and reflection.

During Holy Week the church will be open on Good Friday between 12noon and 2pm.

There are resources on the Church of England website including suggestions for worship at home and prayers. You can access these by following the link below:

Thank you for your patience and understanding with this, and do be assured that the church will be praying for you all.              Rev Jan

Keep us, good Lord,
under the shadow of your mercy.
Sustain and support the anxious,
be with those who care for the sick,
and lift up all who are brought low;
that we may find comfort
knowing that nothing can separate us from your love
in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen

The Church will be open from 3.00 pm – 4.00 pm on Thursdays 26th March and 2nd April.  This is to give extra opportunity, for anyone who wishes, for a time of quiet contemplation and prayer.  So you are all welcome – come and find your own space, sit wherever you like and absorb some precious peaceful moments with our Heavenly Father.

Food Bank

During the present Coronavirus situation, and with the suspension of regular Church services, contributions to the Food Bank will be diminished, when the need for it will be increased. Rev Jan has requested that we still continue to support the venture and leave contributions of food in the Parish Office. Many thanks, Sylvia Mills.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting Church Elections in April

Following the Governments guidelines concerning social interaction whilst we try and deal with the coronavirus outbreak the ANNUAL MEETING for St Peter’s church will not now take place on Sunday 26th April at 11am.  As yet, I am not able to give you a new date for this, but I will make sure you are all given plenty of notice. Thank you for your understanding. Rev Jan.

There are a number of painting jobs which need doing this summer as follows:
Painting the bench by the war memorial, painting the railings by the 1832 door and around the Garden of Remembrance, and treating the church doors. All materials will be provided. Please see Richard or Don if you can help. Thank you. Richard.

The Winter Shelter.

Thank you all for your support over the winter months which has made a great difference to the homeless who use the shelter. I will be collecting on the 22nd March. Please give any of the usual things. The Winter Shelter will close until the autumn on 30th March. All your gifts have been greatly appreciated. Fantastic St. Peter’s!

Fundraising Committee Report for Sunday 22nd March 2020

Talk – ‘Round the World in a Double Decker Bus’

This ‘Talk and Tea’ event took place, as planned, on Thursday 12th March. Although attendance at the event was disappointing, the tea was much enjoyed by those there and we managed to make a small profit on the day. Very many thanks are due to Pauline Osborne for her help with the raffle and, especially, to all those who laboured to put together a delightful afternoon tea for us to enjoy. It was all very much appreciated.

Cancellation of Fund Raising Events

The Coronavirus crisis has forced us to cancel all the planned FR events for the first half of this year and the Boot Fair, the Quiz Night, the ‘Stabat Mater’ concert and the planned performance of the ‘Messiah’ have all been lost. This is a very great disappointment to us because the Quiz Night, in particular, had been almost sold out of tickets and all the funds which the church would have raised are now lost to us. We are not yet 100% certain of the fate of June’s Dinner and Dance event but I strongly suspect that it will be cancelled too. We hope to be able to recover at least some of these events in the last part of 2020 although, of course, everything depends on the progress of this pandemic.

The Future

Looking ahead, however, it is certain that, at some time this crisis will end and some form of normal life will resume and I will be discussing with members of the FR Committee the possibility of staging some kind of big event to celebrate the passing of the pandemic (sounds like a good title!). In addition, we will continue to develop a programme of events for 2021 for people to enjoy and to raise money for the church. We look forward in hope.

Monday Home Group

Following the government’s advice that because of the Coronavirus we should all be distancing ourselves, the Monday Home Group will for the foreseeable future not be meeting physically face-to-face.  But – using means such as the telephone, Skype and/or Zoom – we will continue to keep in contact to share support, news, and reflections on God in all of what is happening.  If anyone reading this note wants to be included in such contacts, please phone us on 863293 for more details.  Michael & Elspeth Cooke.

The Wednesday Home Group

The Wednesday Home Group will also not be meeting for the foreseeable future.
