Dates for your diary

ASH WEDNESDAY 6th March. This year we will be holding a sung Eucharist at 10am on Ash Wednesday. There will be no evening service.

In preparation for the Archdeacon’s visit on 17 March, there will be a working party on
Friday 8 March from 9am until about 12 noon, to tidy the outside of the church, and give the interior a spring clean. Refreshments will be provided. If you can spare an hour please come. Thank you, Richard Baker chair fabric committee.

There will be NO 8am service on the 17th March as I would like to encourage all the congregation to come to the 9:30 service when the Archdeacon will install me (Rev Jan) as your vicar. This will be followed by cake and prosecco in the Main Hall.

The Taize service in March will be on the fourth Sunday of the month (24th March) instead of the third (17th March). No evening service on the 17th March

Annual Parochial Church Meeting Sunday April 7th at 11am in Parish and Community Halls. Please note change of date.

Count Your Blessings this Lent

Christian Aid’s Count Your Blessings Calendar gives a daily thought and action for each day during Lent.  It’s packed with prayers and reflections to really enrich your Lenten journey.  If you would like to use this resource as part of your Lenten reading, copies are now available near the south door or ask Elspeth Cooke (863293) for a copy.

The Winter Shelter. This year the Winter Shelter continues to the end of March so I will be collecting gifts for today and three more Sundays in March. Anything to help the providers of the Church Halls used overnight as Shelters such as cleaning things and lavatory paper or personal toiletries will help. Also the Homeless are out on the streets all day, so anything in the way of warm items will be very useful. You have been very generous all winter! Thank you, June. ( or 07711 072233).

Monday @ 7: Our next event is on Monday 11th March at St Andrews Church, Reading Street, at 7pm.  It will be a musical evening, arranged by Bob and Pat Drywood, known as The Marley Players, and will include music, songs and anecdotes from well known Musicals.  If you would like to bring friends to this event, including any from our congregation, you will all be most welcome.  Please let me know whether or not you are coming, plus any extra people.  Contact Marion Brown, Tel 604524, email . Thank you.

LOOSE CHANGE BOXES Many, many thanks to everybody still participating. For almost 5 years, up to the end of 2018, £6,300 has been raised through the boxes for various specific causes. A magnificent sum for which we are extremely grateful. You will be pleased to learn boxes continue to come in and the scheme now supports Church funds. So far this year a further £224 has been collected.

We do hope, if you don’t have a box for your loose change, you will ask for one (we have about 20 available). You just fill it up and then bring it into the office for emptying into an envelope. You then have the box back to fill up again – Simple! – or contact me. The contents are counted and you are advised of the amount.

Our records show there are a few of you who have had boxes in the past but have maybe forgotten about them because they have never been returned for counting or not for a very long while. Could you search for these and either, if willing, restart the scheme or hand them in for somebody else to use. Don 602287.

Fundraising Committee Report for Sunday 3rd March 2019

Indoor Boot Fair – 23rd March

More than half the tables for the next Boot Fair have already been hired, so anyone interested in hiring one should apply soon, or risk being disappointed. The table hire charge is £10.00 each and you can reserve one by contacting the Parish office (tel. 01843 866061) between 9.00am and 1.00pm on weekdays. You can pay at the office itself or electronically. Whether you would like to sell or browse or buy, don’t forget to mark the 23rd March in your diary, and tell your friends as well. There will be tea or coffee and hot bacon rolls too!

Quiz Night – 5th April

The next Quiz Night (formerly known as ‘Wine and Wisdom’) will take place on Friday 5th April. Tickets are £10.00 each this time and those who have been before will know that this is represents a small increase. However, Fish and Chips will be served to everyone during the interval as part of the ticket price and our costs have been rising over the past few years, so I hope everyone will understand the need for the slightly higher charge. You can book up at the Parish Office, either in person or by telephone (01843 866061) between 9.00am and 1.00pm, or by email. Alternatively, you can indicate an interest by email or on the church’s Facebook site, although bookings cannot be confirmed until payment is made. Anyway, tell your friends and perhaps form a team! Our Quiz Nights are always great fun and, in the past, have been very well supported and enjoyed by everyone – the Fish and Chips have always gone down particularly well so, if you are interested, please sign up. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Future Events

We also have other plans in the pipeline which we hope people will support and enjoy, such as, for example, a Barn Dance on 18th May and also a Fashion Show later in the year. However, our star turn will be the Railway Swing Band, which is coming to St. Peter’s on 26th June and anyone who has seen the band perform will know just how good they are, so you might want to keep the dates free. We have a lot of other ideas which we hope will come together for later in the year and there’ll be a lot more information about all these events as the weeks go by so, keep an eye on this column in the News sheet.

‘The Christ We Share’ – Monday afternoons in Lent: 2:30 pm at 92 Dumpton Park Drive “A picture can be worth 1000 words” – so, starting on Monday 11th March, we will be reflecting for an hour each week on images of Christ from across the world. Marvelling at some of the perhaps surprising insights from other cultures, we look forward to being more inspired by and confident in the Lord we try to serve.  If you’d like to take part in such a journey of encouragement, please join us. Do phone us on 863293 if you’d like more details. Michael & Elspeth Cooke.

The Wednesday Home GroupWe will meet on Ash Wednesday at St. Leu at 2.30 pm when we will look at the Lord’s Passion through the eyes of Peter, using The Nail by Stephen Cottrell. On the following Wednesdays we will follow five more witnesses. You are very welcome if you would like to join us. June. ( or 07711 072233).

We are always SO grateful for the cash donations given each week at services. If you are a tax payer it would be an even greater benefit if you could put your donation in a completed yellow Gift Aid envelope so that we can recover the extra 25p in every pound given!
