I will be leading a trip to Oberammergau in September 2020. Flying from Gatwick on the 2nd September, we will be based in Imst (Austrian Tyrol). We will spend one night in Oberammergau (where we have top grade tickets for the Passion Play), before returning on the 9th September. Brochure with full details will be available in March, so if you are interested in joining me, or would like more information, please contact me Thank you. Rev Jan
PERSONNEL As we approach the Annual Parochial Church Meeting which will be held at the end of April we need to find someone to be the Chair of the Halls Committee and we also need a new Church Warden. If you are interested in filling either of these positions or can suggest someone you feel may be suitable please do come and talk to me. Many thanks Rev Jan
Count Your Blessings this Lent
Christian Aid’s COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS calendar is available now. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, 14th February, the calendar gives us an opportunity through a short reflection each day during Lent to walk alongside those who have been forced to flee their homes and to reflect on the blessings in our own lives. If you would like to use this resource as part of your Lenten reading, please ask Elspeth Cooke (863293) for a copy. You can also download the calendar from www.christianaid.org.uk/lent.
THE WINTER SHELTER. We would be grateful for toothbrushes, personal size tissues, men’s deodorant, disposable double or triple blade razors, shaving foam and shower gel. Any thermal vests, socks and gloves are always welcome. On March 4th we will be welcoming Carl from the Salvation Army, who has been receiving our gifts and who can tell us more about the Winter Shelter, at our 9.30 service. We will be supporting the Winter Shelter and Porchlight. Thank you, June
MONDAY @ 7.
Our next event is lunch at the Racing Greyhound, Dumpton on Monday 19th February at 1pm. We need to prebook, so if you haven’t contacted me yet, and you would like to go, please contact me as a matter of urgency, as I have to give numbers and orders in the next few days. I also need payment with your order, exact money please. , or Tel 604524. Thanks Marion Brown.
HOLY WEEK: ‘Transformed by Hope’ This Holy Week, Thanet Deanery will be holding a Mission Week. The theme for the week is ‘Transformed by Hope’ and we will be joined by members of The Community of St Anselm. The Broadstairs Group of churches has been asked if we can host 4 of these members, possibly in two homes. If this is something you would like to do, and have the space, please would you get in touch with The Rev’d Jan Durrans (01843 869169 or ). Thank you.
INVITATION: Come and Sing!
St. Peter’s Choir invite you to join us in singing a Good Friday performance (30th March, at 4pm) of John Stainer’s ‘Story of the Cross’, ‘ They have
taken away my Lord’ and Karl Jenkins’ ‘Sacred Songs’. No audition required. Rehearsals will be in church Fridays 7.15-8.00pm. Contact: Patrick Dunn.
FUND RAISING NEWS-we now are raising funds for the Garden of Remembrance and we need YOUR help!
Indoor Boot Fair on 27 Jan raised £354.13! Once again, many thanks to all who came and supported it and to those who gave up their morning to run it.
The Garden of Remembrance needs some £17,000 to repair and refurbish it, so your continued support is really important.
Only 14 days to go until Sat 17 Feb when the next Indoor Boot Fair takes place. There are just a few tables remaining for this event and also for our last one for a while, which will be on Sat 17 March, so do pop along and at the very least have a ‘cuppa’ and a bacon roll!
Only 17 days to go until Thurs 22Feb-what are you doing on that afternoon?
There are still a few places available! Do you know who this is and what she did?
Having inherited a £1.8m fortune from her grandfather following the death of her stepmother, Harriet Mellon, Angela Burdett-Coutts was forbidden by 19th-century social convention from becoming involved in the Bank. She chose instead to channel her formidable energy and desire to make a difference into philanthropy. Made a Baroness in 1871 by Queen Victoria for her charitable work, Angela was the first woman to have been made a peer in recognition of her accomplishments and was widely known as the ‘Queen of the Poor’ for the work she did in London. Charles Dickens, a client of Coutts, was her almoner for some time and she supported many of his causes for social reform.
To hear more, join us on Thursday 22 February at 3pm in St Peter’s Main Hall when our local and much in demand raconteuse, Margaret Ovenden will once again delight us with one of her amusing and informative talks, ‘A Bountiful Banker: Angela Burdett-Coutts’, after which there will be a delicious and special tea and a raffle*. Tickets only £6, so first come, first served!
Donations, please, for 22 Feb:
Raffle prizes*and if you can offer a cake, please tell Kate or ring her on 862516. We have only had a very few offers of each so far!
OLD PALM CROSSES If you would like your old palm cross to be burnt for ash and used to mark the forehead of those who come to church on Ash Wednesday please leave it either at the back of church or in the Parish Office. Thank you
Monday Home Group – 2:30 pm at 92 Dumpton Park Drive, Broadstairs
We continue to meet as usual on Mondays, but during Lent (i.e. from 19th February) we shall be reflecting each week on one of the characters who encountered Jesus during Holy Week – 8 people including the Servant Girl, Barabbas, The Roman Centurion, Pilate’s wife, the Best Friend, the Thief. We shall do this by watching each week a 14-minute video (from a BBC/Bible Society collaboration) featuring a top rate actor providing a thought-provoking vignette as they reflect on their motivations and what happened. With the award-winning series prompting reviews such as “perfectly portrayed, with a twist” (The Sunday Telegraph), “powerful and passionate … intense and absorbing” (Evening Standard) – please do think of coming and joining us – even for just one session. More details from Michael & Elspeth Cooke, 863293.
